How To Make Great Compost For Your Garden

Composting our food waste and garden waste is a great way to stop them going to waste in a landfill an the end result is great for our gardens. It will add lots of nutrition to the fruits, vegetables, greens and herbs you grow which will make you healthier!

By composting your food/garden scraps (fruits, vegetables, leaves, grass clippings, etc.) you get the most out of them. While you may consider them to be scraps they are actually incredibly useful.
The nutrients from these scraps will be broken down by microorganisms in your compost pile. You can start by layering down a dry layer (hay, dry leaves, paper etc.) then your food and garden scraps.  Continue this and the compost should break down nicely.

There is a ratio of dry material vs food scraps, you want them basically even but have a bit more dry material so the food scraps don’t rot too quickly and produce a bad odor.

For extra compost potency be sure to include items like:

  • Manure
  • Seaweed
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Egg shells
  • Previously finished compost (adds beneficial bacteria to kickstart your compost)
  • Nutrient dense weeds like dandelion, plantain etc.
  • Aloe Vera
  • etc.
